Website Overhaul In Progress!
AME Board members have been extremely busy lately. So busy, in fact, that none of us has had time to keep the website updated! Please do not be misled by the content of this site as it currently exists. In recent years, AME members have been involved with dozens of field expeditions related to marine exploration, including five exploratory expeditions directly coordinated by AME (West Oahu, Taiwan, Christmas Island, Vanuatu, and the Caroline Islands). The last of these was the subject of the 3-hour BBC documentary film, Pacific Abyss, which premiered primetime on BBC-1 in August, 2008 (a 90-minute version also aired on the Discovery Channel in the U.S.) We have hundreds of gigabytes of standard and Hi-Def video clips, static images, specimen data, and field notes that we WILL make available through this website as soon as we can. We are also very proud of our related achievements: research projects (including a $1.2M NOAA-funded project to explore deep coral reefs in Hawaii, led by AME's Chief Science Officer, Dr. Richard Pyle), new rebreather technology development (three AME Board members are active test-divers, and one was involved in many aspects of the technology development), and many, many other projects planned for 2009 and beyond. At our year-end Board meeting last December, one of our priority action items was to get this website overhauled and updated. So....watch this space! [Posted 7 February 2009]

Mission Statement

Our mission is to conduct and facilitate innovative scientific exploration of undersea environments. Through the novel application of advanced diving equipment and techniques, we provide unprecedented opportunities for research and discovery in ways not possible by conventional means. Our overriding goal is to foster increased knowledge about the ocean and its inhabitants, enabling better understanding and more effective preservation of a wide range of marine habitats.
