Research
This page is still under development, and will continue to expand in the weeks and months to come. In addition to the links already provided below, it will contain extensive documentation of scientific discoveries and contributions made by current Board members, including listings of new discoveries, significant research projects and expeditions, and a robust collection of images and other digital media.
Current Research Projects
The Association for Marine Exploration and its Board members have completed three significant projects:
- West Oahu in May 2004: A series of dives to depths of 100-120 meters yielded many valuable results (including video images, maps of the habitat, fish community lists, and rare fishes donated to the Waikiki Aquarium).
- Green Island (Taiwan) in April 2005: A series of dives to depths of 60-80 meters resulted in many interesting discoveries, including new records of fishes for Taiwan, and several new species.
- Kiritimati (Christmas Island, Line Islands) in July 2005: A full-blown expedition to explore the marine life at depths of 60-120 meters resulted in the discovery of more than a dozen new species.
In October of 2006, AME divers will participate in a major international biodiversity survey of Vanuatu, in the Western Pacific.
AME Board members are actively pursuing grants to fund several major scientific expitions, including a geological investigation of ancient sea-stands in Hawaii, fish surveys in Hawai‘i, the Caroline Islands, American Samoa, and the Cook Islands.
More details on all of these projects will be posted to this web site soon.
As new projects are organized, sponsored, and hosted by the Association for Marine Exploration, detailed expedition reports will be added to this site. Such reports will include extensive images, details of diving equipment and protocols, dive logs and decompression profiles, and many other relevant details. Whenever possible, daily report logs will be updated to the site in real-time, allowing visitors to monitor the progress of expeditions as the events unfold.
